The Crucible
Making the fine and industrial arts accessible for all.
The Crucible is a nonprofit organization and art school dedicated to making the fine and industrial arts accessible for all ages, backgrounds, and abilities Their work is centered in Oakland and the East Bay in California, where they provide high-quality, fun classes and workshops to over 8,000 people each year.
Every year, more than 5,000 8–18 year olds participate in The Crucible’s workshops, summer camps, school collaborations, and pre-professional training and leadership programs to gain in-depth knowledge of the creative process, ability to bring their ideas to life, increase their confidence in their artistic risk-taking, and learn new skills that open doors for creative and vocational exploration.
The Crucible’s free Bike Program has help over 7,000 youth learn mechanical skills and gain access to sustainable transportation by teaching them how to build, repair, and maintain their own bicycle. The Bike Program promotes an alternative, sustainable mode of transportation, while providing essential bike repair services, diverting waste from landfills, and reinforcing reuse of materials.
The Crucible rents out studio space to makers, providing access to tools and equipment to work on individual art projects. They also offer full and partial scholarships for youth and adults to participate in their programs in order to help those who would not otherwise be able to afford their enriching services.
